How Do I Display a Laptop on a Collaboration Board via HDMI Cable?

Overview

There are several options to connect your laptop to present to the various screens throughout the School of Medicine.  In this example, we are using the Small Group Learning room as a demonstration.

Step 1 - Locate an HDMI cable

HDMI cables are available in the majority of the presentation and academic areas (e.g., the Convening Stairs and Small Group Learning rooms).  The KPSOM IT team also includes USB-C adapters wherever there are HDMI cables in case your laptop does not have an HDMI port.

HDMI cables are not typically in the small conference rooms or other more private spaces but can be checked out from the Tech Bar on the 2nd floor if needed.

Most HDMI cables throughout the building are associated with colors for easy identification.

In the example above, this HDMI is identified as the Red HDMI, indicated by the red tape.

Step 2 - Plug the HDMI Cable into your Laptop

Connect the HDMI cable to your laptop, either directly or through an adapter.

Protip: If you have a Mac and nothing shows up when you plug in the HDMI cable directly, try using the USB-C adapter!

Protip: If you have a Windows laptop, you can connect the USB cable located on the end-tables to use the touch controls on the Collaboration Board!

Note: There is only one USB cable per collaboration board.  To use the collaboration board's touch controls, use the USB cable located closest to the Collaboration Board you are using.

Step 3 - Use the Crestron Control Panel

There are Crestron control panels in every location where there are projectors or permanently mounted Collaboration Boards.  The Crestron panel interface is common throughout the building, with the primary differences being the devices available for you to use.

When your HDMI is plugged in and your laptop is awake, you will see a green "Active" line next to your source.

In our example below: the green "Active" line is next to Red HDMI, which correlates to the cable we're using.  Note the other HDMI inputs do not have green lines next to them because they aren't plugged into anything.
